How to choose the right IATA transport cage for your dog or cat

Choosing an IATA cage: why it matters

The IATA approved transport carrier is much more than a simple travel accessory — it's a safety guarantee for your animal during any air or private transport. Wrong choice leads to stress and discomfort. Right choice makes it a reassuring space for your companion.

IATA standard criteria

To comply with IATA Live Animals Regulations, a transport carrier must meet the following criteria:

Size

The animal must be able to:

  • Stand up in an upright position without touching the roof
  • Turn around without difficulty
  • Lie down in a natural position

  • Materials

  • Hard plastic (polyethylene) or fibreglass for premium models
  • Soft fabric carriers are generally not accepted in the hold
  • The bottom must be waterproof and covered with absorbent material

  • Size guide by breed

    For dogs

  • XS: Chihuahua, Yorkshire - min 45 × 30 × 30 cm
  • S: Beagle, Cocker - min 60 × 40 × 40 cm
  • M: Labrador, Golden - min 80 × 55 × 60 cm
  • L: German Shepherd, Husky - min 100 × 67 × 75 cm
