How to prepare your dog for a long car journey

Why prepare your dog before a long trip?

Dogs are not naturally adapted to car travel, especially over long distances. Motion sickness, stress and anxiety can make the experience difficult for your pet and you. Good preparation in advance makes all the difference.

1. Gradually getting your dog used to the car

Start with short sessions in the stationary car. Let your dog explore the vehicle, sniff the seats and feel comfortable. Gradually increase the duration and add short trips before considering a long journey.

Practical tips:

  • Start with short 5-10 minute drives
  • Reward with treats at the end of each trip
  • Always use the same familiar blanket or mat
  • Associate the car with positive experiences (park, walks)

  • 2. Preparing your dog's health

    Prior veterinary consultation:

Before any long trip, consult your vet. They can assess whether your dog is healthy enough to travel and prescribe if necessary motion sickness medication or natural calming agents.

    3. The day before departure

  • Light meal: Feed your dog 3-4 hours before departure, never just before. A full stomach increases the risk of nausea.
  • Physical exercise: A long walk the evening before and morning of departure will help tire your dog and make him calmer in the car.
  • Prepare equipment: IATA approved carrier or canine seatbelt, bowl, fresh water, absorbent mat, familiar toys, medication.

  • 4. During the journey

    Regular stops:

Plan a stop every 2-3 hours to allow your dog to stretch, drink and relieve himself. Never leave him alone in a vehicle in direct sunlight.

    Temperature and ventilation:

Maintain a cool temperature in the cabin (ideally between 18-22°C). Avoid direct drafts.
